#OOTD – Baby it’s cold outside

Cold lips, pale face, breathing in snowflakes…winter has officially arrived in Pittsburgh!  As much as I dread getting my toddler bundled up to leave the house, I love winter fashion.  Cozy knits,  draped cardigans, boots & scarves, all of it!  Though it would be easier to just throw on leggings & an oversized sweater I’ve been trying to maintain my sanity through chic ensembles that make me look & feel great!  Plus, I grabbed all of these styles at great prices, which makes my hubby happy too 🙂

#OOTD -Dark Denim & Linen Blends

Nothing is better than catching up with an old friend over good wine & small plates.  Last night I was so lucky to see my friend who was visiting from out of town.  We ate, drank & shared our adventures in Motherhood.  I didn’t want to say goodbye… but unfortunately all good things must come to an end.  Safe travels back to Denver my love!

It finally feels like fall in Pittsburgh, which means I can finally wear dark colored denim & ankle booties!  I am obsessed with this dark burgundy denim & linen blend knit, both of which I picked up for less than $50.  Bring on the cooler weather mother nature; I’m ready!

#OOTD – Casual Monday

The rain has finally stopped & the sun is shining bright.  The grass may still be wet but we’re taking advantage of this beautiful Monday!  Forget about the bubble mower, the swing set or even the cozy coupe car…our new obsession is walking up & down the steps.

Mommin’ Ain’t Easy

Celebrating Mother’s Day over the weekend brought me to reflect on my journey as a mom.  It has not been easy.  In fact, it has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done.  From sleepless nights to struggles within my marriage, to almost 2 years later trying to potty train & control my toddler’s tantrums…did I say this hasn’t been easy?!

But with struggle comes reward.  We have the most adventurous, full of life, loving, funny as hell little man.  Before our son arrived, my husband & I would see parents with frustration on their faces glare at their children while their kids did cute, witty things.  We couldn’t understand why they weren’t laughing or at least smiling at their mischiefs.

It was then we told ourselves we would cherish those little moments, laugh more than we yelled and encourage our son to be bold.  Even through the sleepless nights & frustrating days of reasoning with a toddler I find myself constantly laughing at his shenanigans.  Our little comedian brings a smile to my face every day.

We are so blessed to have such a healthy, energetic son in our lives.  He has taught us to be patient, communicate better and not to sweat the small stuff.

#OOTD – Split Back Blouse

Last night I had the opportunity to attend a banquet for my Mom’s Club.  I know what you’re thinking…Mom’s Club?  But, joining this group was one of the best decisions I made after having my son.  Not only do we have play dates, share advice & go on field trips, but we also have fun “mom only” get togethers.  Our banquet last night consisted of dinner & drinks at a local Italian restaurant.  The spread was fantastic, the wine was overpoured & the conversation was hilarious; I love these women!

I hate to say this out loud in fear of jinxing myself, but I think spring has finally sprung in Pittsburgh!  The sun was shining a warm 70 degrees yesterday making it the perfect day to wear my new split-back blouse.  I was waiting for warm weather to showcase this style since layering a jacket on top would defeat the purpose of the split-back.

I decided to pair this bold blouse with a dark wash flare denim and my Tory accessories.  I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I love mixing casual or trendy styles with classic pieces such as my Tory Burch wedges & handbag.  I added a bold lipstick that matched the pink hue of the blouse making this outfit that much more playful!

New Spring Staple – Denim Jacket

I have been on the hunt for the perfect denim jacket for quite some time.  The jackets I find are either too long, too tight in the shoulders or just not what I’m looking for.  The other day after dinner my husband & I decided to run into Old Navy to pick up some sweatpants for our little nugget.  He’s going through yet another growth spurt and is constantly making messes; Old Navy is the perfect place to pick up pants he’ll likely only wear a few times.

While perusing the aisles, what did I find?  Non-other than the perfect denim jacket!  Who would’ve thought?!  This jacket was the right shade, the right fit and on sale for under $30.  Win-win-win!

20160405_154549

Yesterday I incorporated the jacket into my wardrobe by pairing it with a basic black legging and a graphic tee, which I also picked up at Old Navy for $10.  I love mixing casual pieces with chic essentials such as my Tory Burch Reva Ballet Flats and Chloe + Isabel Statement Necklace.

The weather in Pittsburgh has been anything but dress-appropriate lately.  I cannot wait for the sun to make an appearance so I can layer this jacket over a maxi dress or jumpsuit!

Hungry for Healthy Pancakes

I love seeing my son’s eyes light up when I ask if he wants pancakes for breakfast.  It’s by far his favorite mealtime option.  I make a big batch of toddler-size pancakes at the beginning of the week; enough to eat now, save for tomorrow & freeze for the rest of the week.

Over the months I’ve experimented with different recipes, trying to find that perfect balance of yummy & healthy.  Today I think I finally came up with the perfect combination & I am so excited to share it!

Lemon & Blueberry Pancakes

In a small bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients

1 Cup White, Whole Wheat Flour.  I use King Arthur brand.

2 TBSP Lemon Infused Sugar.  I used the reserved sugar from the Citrus Peels I made last month.  As a substitution, add lemon zest to 2 TBSP sugar.

2 TSP Baking Powder

In a medium bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients.  Once combined add 1/2 cup whole organic blueberries.

1 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk

2 TBSP (melted) Coconut Oil

1 Large Egg

1 TBSP Fresh Lemon Juice

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients & mix until just combined.  Heat a large skillet over medium heat (greased or nonstick).  Add TBSP portions of the pancake mixture to the heated skillet.  You can make the pancakes as big or small as you like.  Tablespoon portions work best for us; my little man usually eats them grab & go style as he plays or watches the cars rush to work.  Once the pancakes start to bubble it’s time to flip.

We usually eat these as is, but you can serve them with maple syrup, agave nectar or even strawberry preserves.  Enjoy!

Spring (closet) Cleaning

The windows are open, the daffodils are in bloom and the sun is shining…it must be spring!  That also means it’s time for some spring (closet) cleaning.  Thanks to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse the nugget was entertained long enough for me to transition my closet from winter to spring.  While doing so I came across some pieces I forgot I had; it was like going on a shopping spree in my own closet!  I can’t wait to start wearing chambray shirts, white jeans & peep toe shoes every day.

…………………………………………………………………

Last year we started a tradition of hosting Easter dinner at our house.  With that being said, I wanted a casual-chic ensemble that would make entertaining & cooking a breeze.  Instead of running out to buy a new outfit for this weekend, I decided to pull together some styles that I already owned.

A classic shirt dress is a great way to stay casual & cool while entertaining.  I picked this one up during my many years of working for Lacoste.  It’s a staple piece that I will continue to pull out each spring.  Since Lacoste embodies a classic, timeless style I thought it was best to accessorize with my Tory Burch studs & wedge heels.

Since we don’t go to mass on Easter Sunday & we’re just having family over, I wanted a casual go-to outfit in case I opted out of the dress.  What better way to stay casual than with a pair of light wash boyfriend jeans.  To play on this relaxed look, I paired the jeans with my StitchFix Market & Spruce Hi-Lo Tee and a boho-inspired sheer cardigan.  I added a blue beaded necklace & my Tory Burch wedges to help elongate my legs.

How will you be celebrating Easter?  I’d love to hear what look you’re going for this weekend!

Citrus Peels & Vino

I love spending Sunday afternoons in the kitchen.  My husband entertains the babe & I am able to get lost in my own little world of cooking, baking, and more often than not, enjoying a quiet glass of wine.  Who are we kidding, it’s never quiet in this house.  But, at least I get to enjoy a glass of wine!

This past Sunday I finally perfected my homemade Potato Chips & experimented with making French Fries in the oven.  My husband claimed he didn’t like homemade fries, but when he tried this recipe he requested I make them every night.  So I guess they out turned okay 🙂 For the Fries, I adapted a recipe I found on Pinterest from Layers of Happiness.  I basically just used coconut oil, sea salt & garlic to make a healthy alternative to fast food fries.

Earlier in the week a Facebook post caught my eye on how to make candied fruit peels.  With all the fruit we’ve been eating & cooking with lately I thought this would be the perfect way to use the discarded peels.

20160320_145141-1

For my candied peels I adapted a recipe from Glorious Treats that I’m excited to share.  I ended up using peels from oranges, lemons & tangerines.  I cut & cleaned the peels into bite size strips that would make for easy snacking.  The recipe suggested boiling the peels in equal parts water & sugar, but since we’re watching our sugar intake I didn’t use nearly as much sugar.

Once the peels were translucent, I drained them & laid them over a bed of sprinkled sugar.  I rolled them in the sugar until they were fully covered; again, using about 1/4 of the suggested amount.  I let the peels soak in the sugar for about 15 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to dry.  I saved the leftover sugar for future citrus-flavored recipes.

#OOTD – Day to Night

With yesterday being St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to wear green, but not in a “kiss me I’m Irish” way. I also had a full plate and knew I wouldn’t have time to change outfits later in the day.  I opted for an understated green pixie pant that I could easily transition from day to night.

During the day my son & I had a brunch/play date planned with friends.  To keep things casual, I paired my pixie’s with a casual tee, my Kensie blazer & a pointed toe flat.

Later that night we were celebrating my brother’s birthday.  I guess you could say he’s an honorary Irishman being that his birthday is St. Patrick’s Day.  To transition from casual to chic, I switched out my knit blazer for a more structured fit.  I also changed from flats to my favorite high-heeled ankle booties & threw my hair in a slicked back pony tail.  I added a bold lip & my Tory Burch handbag…I was ready for dinner & drinks!
