Favorite Thing Friday

I’m that impulse shopper that stores love.  You think I would know better since I worked in the retail industry for 10 years, but I have such a hard time only buying what I intended while running errands.  Those little displays on the aisle end caps & at the register call out to me, enticing me to buy things I didn’t know I wanted nor that I need.

This week while at Rite Aid I came across an end cap display of Wet n’ Wild cosmetics marked down 40% off.  Even though I’m not a huge fan of Wet n Wild products I had to purchase something!  Luckily enough I ended up buying something that I love & I’m excited to share my new favorite thing.

Wet n Wild MegaSlicks Lip Gloss

WetnWildMegaSlick

The lip gloss is originally priced at $1.99 so even without the promotion it was still a steal.  For the price, I was expecting a sticky gloss that dried out my lips, but rather it does exactly what is claims to and adds mega shine, color & moisturizing luster!  I picked up Raspberry Voice but cannot wait to go back for more shades.  The next time you’re at the store looking for a new lip color, pick this up!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do…and if not, it’s only $1.99.

Fall Essentials for under $100

It’s mid-October, the leaves are changing & the air is crisp…it must be fall!  Fall is by far my favorite season.  Not only does it mean it’s time for hay rides, spiced lattes & pumpkin candles, but it also means I can finally break into my stash of sweaters, scarves & boots!

Although I have essentials that I’ve collected throughout the years I love adding to my fall wardrobe.  Shopping for new pieces, whether it’s on trend or just another basic, should be exciting not expensive.  I’ve put together a list of my favorite must-have fall fashions that won’t break the bank.

Blazers

A blazer is a timeless essential that can easily transition from season to season.  I have various styles in my closet & I find it’s the perfect go-to when I’m in a rush or can’t decide what to wear.  A blazer also lets you extend your summer wardrobe by layering it on top of tanks & dresses.  H&M has a wide variety of blazers right now, from solid boyfriend fits to patterned wool blends, all at great prices!

Ankle Boots

Fall is the perfect season to wear ankle boots, especially in Pittsburgh.  The weather is just chilly enough to cover your toes, but not cold enough that you need insulated, water-proof boots yet.  I love ankle boots because of their versatility; they can be worn with denim that is cuffed or scrunched just above the ankle, with a short skirt or even a long dress.  I recently purchased these Zipper Ankle Boots from Kohl’s.  They were originally $89.99, but I bought them on sale for $39.99 and I had a 20% off coupon.  I love finding great essentials at a great price!

Plaid

Every season plaid makes its way back into the rotation.  Plaid flannels are always a staple in the fall but this year you can also find plaid in bags, dresses and pants.  How are you wearing your plaid this fall?

Pixie Mid-Rise Ankle Pants in Black Plaid, Old Navy $34.94

Flannel Plaid Shirt, Mossimo, Target $22.99

Ruanas

One of my favorite layering pieces for fall is a ruana; a poncho-style garment.  Ruanas are usually one size fits all so it can be worn a few different ways – you can wear it belted around your waist to show off your figure or you can wear it as is & let it drape off your shoulders.  Francesca’s has some beautiful ones right now…

Blue Cruz Stripe Ruana $38.00 (right)

No matter your style, age or size these key pieces are a must for any fall wardrobe.  I hope you find inspiration in the suggestions I’ve given.  If you have any questions on layering or putting an outfit together don’t hesitate to reach out!

Is it nap time yet?

In an earlier blog post My Glimpse into Morning Refuge I wrote about starting my day in a peaceful state before the madness began.  Ever since that entry I have tried to set my alarm & wake up before my son, but he always beats me to the punch; I swear he knows I’m trying to start my day without him!  Such a sweetheart but he definitely has a fear of missing out (#FOMO).

Every morning is a different adventure, especially since he is 16 months and ever-changing.  This morning was no exception.  My little man either caught a cold or is congested from playing in the foliage while picking apples & pumpkins, either way he hasn’t been sleeping at night.  Last night he was asleep and in bed by 8 PM but woke up coughing & crying at 9 PM, 11 PM, midnight, 2 AM, 5 AM and 6:30 AM. Needless to say, I maybe got 2 hours of sleep.  He didn’t sleep well the night before either (no shocker there, he normally wakes up at least twice), but I was hoping for a good un-interrupted 5 hours.

Exhausted & half asleep I decided to put him in bed with me to watch Mickey Mouse while I closed my eyes & slowly woke up.  By 7 AM he was bored & ready for breakfast.  We did our morning routine of making the bed & brushing our teeth before heading downstairs to the kitchen.  He drank a sippy cup of almond milk (whole milk upsets his stomach) while I put away last night’s dishes.  Once his milk was gone he was ready for a banana which he ate while taking all of the pots & pans out of the cabinet.  At 7:30 he ate a big bowl of multi-grain Cheerios while I quickly checked my e-mail and talked to my husband.  Eating cereal usually takes him 30 minutes since he likes to feed himself every other bite.

Once breakfast was finished and his cheerio-made chaos was cleaned up I decided to make Apple Cinnamon Muffins.  I put Curious George on the TV while I mixed my ingredients, but within 5 minutes my little man was in the kitchen ready to help.  I love his interest with cooking/baking so I let him stir the apples into the batter.  While pouring the batter into the muffin tins my quick, curious babe grabbed the glass measuring cup; in hindsight I should have used a metal one.  Before I could react it smashed to the floor, but I guess it’s not an adventure without an accident!  I put him in the pack n play so I could sweep and vacuum the glass pieces.  He seemed very content so I let him hang out in there with his stuffed animals while I FINALLY made a cup of coffee!  In those few moments to myself I wrote this blog entry which probably doesn’t make much sense since it was rushed, but it was such a busy weekend and I have not had the chance to write in a while.

It is only 9:30 AM and we’ve already made a mess, broke something, baked muffins, ate breakfast & a morning snack, had two meltdowns, stuffed magnets into the heating vent and I’ve had to reheat my coffee three times!  Is it nap time yet…?
